Which Teams Have Won Back-to-Back European Cup/Champions League Titles?

Paris Saint-Germain have the chance to become just the second team to win back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles on Saturday. How many teams have done so in the entire history of the competition, though? We reveal all.

Which Teams Have Won Back-to-Back European Cup/Champions League Titles?

Arsenal will be hoping they can crown a memorable season with a historic double, having already won the Premier League for the first time in 22 years. The Gunners have the chance to win their first ever European Cup/UEFA Champions League on Saturday, but they have the significant obstacle of the reigning champions to overcome.

Paris Saint-Germain’s form in Europe has been ominous yet again, and they will take on Arsenal in Budapest with the chance to make their own piece of history.

PSG won their first ever European Cup/Champions League last season when they thrashed Inter 5-0 in a record final victory, and they could become only the second team to win back-to-back Champions Leagues since the competition rebranded in 1992.

There were many years of the European Cup before then, though, so here, we go through every team that has managed to win back-to-back European Cup/Champions League titles.

    Real Madrid: 1955-56, 1956-57, 1957-58, 1958-59, 1959-60

Real Madrid have won this competition so many times (15) that it is almost inevitable that some of those titles came back-to-back. Indeed, they began their dominance by winning the first five European Cups in a row, the big show-offs.

The first European Cup was contested between 16 teams, with Madrid facing French side Reims in the final. Reims had beaten Hibernian in the semis, but were unable to stop Los Blancos, who won a dramatic inaugural final at the Parc Des Princes 4-3.

They were able to lift the trophy in their own stadium the following year as Madrid beat Fiorentina 2-0 at the Bernabéu in 1957, while they defeated another Italian opponent in Milan a year later to make it three in a row.

Another win over Reims in 1959 was followed by an astonishing 7-3 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt at Hampden Park in 1960.

This run remains the only time a team has won as many as four European Cup/Champions League titles in a row.

    Benfica: 1960-61, 1961-62

The Portuguese giants became the first team to end Real Madrid’s stranglehold over the competition, though it was Clásico rivals Barcelona who eliminated the holders in the first round, before reaching the final.

However, Benfica awaited, and they defeated Barcelona 3-2 in Bern to lift their first European Cup.

Their second came just a year later, and indeed, it was Real Madrid who were tasked with stopping them and getting their title back.

It wasn’t to be, though, as Benfica won 5-3 in Amsterdam. A Ferenc Puskás hat-trick had put Madrid 3-2 ahead, but the Portuguese side fought back, and two goals from Eusébio won it for them.

Benfica reached the final again a year later, but their run was ended by Milan in a 2-1 defeat.

    Inter: 1963-64, 1964-65

Real Madrid were doing their best to get back on top in Europe, but they were beaten in the final again in 1964, with Inter earning their first European Cup with a 3-1 win in Vienna.

The Nerazzurri slayed another former winner a year later when they beat Benfica at San Siro, with Jair scoring the only goal of the game to make it back-to-back European Cup successes for the Serie A giants.

    Ajax: 1970-71, 1971-72, 1972-73

With the European Cup shared around for a bit in the late sixties, Ajax started their run of dominance as the seventies began.

The exciting Dutch side, led on the field by the great Johan Cruyff, won their first European Cup by beating Panathinaikos 2-0 at Wembley Stadium. They followed that in 1972 with another 2-0 win, this time over Inter in Rotterdam, in the stadium of Ajax’s rivals Feyenoord. Cruyff scored both goals.

It was Italian opposition again the following year as Ajax made it three European Cups in a row, beating Juventus 1-0 in Belgrade.

    Bayern Munich: 1973-74, 1974-75, 1975-76

Bayern Munich took the baton from Ajax and ran with it for another three years. The German giants earned their first European Cup win over Atlético Madrid in 1974. The two teams played out a 1-1 draw in the first final, before Bayern thrashed their opponents 4-0 in a replay two days later.

Goals from Franz Roth and the legendary Gerd Müller saw off Leeds United a year later in Paris, before Bayern made it three on the bounce as they beat Saint-Étienne 1-0 in Glasgow in 1976, Roth again finding the net in a European Cup final.

    Liverpool: 1976-77, 1977-78

Up to this point, Manchester United had been the only English team to win the European Cup (1967-68), but Liverpool’s first and second successes in the competition sparked a run that saw English teams win six in a row, and seven out of eight between 1976 and 1984.

The Reds earned their first of six European Cups when they beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 in Rome.

They were back on English soil a year later, though, as Kenny Dalglish dinked in the only goal of the game against Club Brugge at Wembley to make it back-to-back victories in the competition for Bob Paisley’s side.

    Nottingham Forest: 1978-79, 1979-80

Brian Clough made quite the impact at Nottingham Forest, not least in winning them two consecutive European Cups.

It was a good start from Forest in 1978 as they eliminated reigning champions Liverpool in the first round 2-0 on aggregate.

Both final victories came via a 1-0 scoreline, the first against Malmö in Munich thanks to Trevor Francis, while a year later they overcame Hamburg at the Bernabéu via a John Robertson goal.

    Milan: 1988-89, 1989-90

It was the late eighties before a team were able to successfully defend their crown.

Arrigo Sacchi had a phenomenal impact with the Rossoneri, and it was a suitably comfortable win in the 1989 final. Milan thrashed Steaua București thanks to a brace each from Ruud Gullit and Marco Van Basten.

They had a tricky run to the final a year later, overcoming Real Madrid and Bayern Munich along the way, and Milan defeated Benfica 1-0 in the final thanks to Frank Rijkaard’s solitary goal in Vienna.

    Real Madrid: 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18

That was it for over two and a half decades. The birth of the UEFA Champions League in 1992 seemed to open things up, with a different team winning it every season until Real Madrid’s muscle memory kicked in.

This run began with a Madrid derby at San Siro, which was very closely contested. After a 1-1 draw and extra-time, the game went to penalties, which Real Madrid won 5-3, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the winning spot-kick.

It was far more comfortable the following year in Cardiff when Zinedine Zidane’s men thrashed his former club Juventus 4-1, with Ronaldo scoring twice again.

Their third in a row was against Liverpool in Kyiv. Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale (2) scored the goals in a 3-1 victory that remains the most recent incident of a team successfully defending the Champions League.
