Nine people were injured when a driver ran a red light and struck a CTA bus, causing it to crash into another CTA bus on the city’s West Side on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.
Around 6:42 p.m., a man driving a Subaru sedan eastbound on the 3100 block of West Lake Street ran a red light and struck a no. 82 CTA bus that was heading south on Homan Avenue, authorities said. That crash caused the CTA bus to crash into another CTA bus that was headed north on Homan Avenue.
A sedan with a crunched driver’s side door and front end could be seen in the intersection after the crash near two CTA buses that also had significant damage. The front windshield of one of the buses was completely shattered, and broken glass and debris could be seen scattered around the two buses.
Authorities said nine people were hospitalized after the crash, including seven passengers and a driver of one of the CTA buses, who was initially listed in critical condition.
The conditions of the injured passengers were not immediately known.
The driver of the sedan was initially listed in good condition, authorities said, and he was issued multiple citations.
No. 82 buses were temporarily rerouted in both directions at Homan Avenue and Lake Street after the crash, according to CTA. The reroute was still in effect as of 10 p.m.
