ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Representative Joe Morelle shared his experience visiting the ICE detention facility in Batavia as an alleged hunger strike unfolds at a detention center in New Jersey.
News10NBC spoke with Congressman Joe Morelle today after his visit to the ICE detention center in Batavia. Morelle was there to speak with Omar Ramos-Jimenez, a local restaurant owner who has lived in the U.S. for 30 years and has been detained at the facility since December.
When asked if conditions in Batavia were similar to those reported in New Jersey, Morelle said detainees at the Batavia facility have engaged in hunger protests from time to time. “The visit we had, we talked with people. We walked through the facility. They did mention that from time to time, people engage in hunger protests,” Morelle said.
The question came after protests erupted outside the Newark, New Jersey ICE detention center, where protesters and lawyers said detainees were being denied adequate food and healthcare. “Everybody needs to be treated humanely, and the main thing that we’re protesting above all else is the conditions of this facility,” Newark protester Kyler Dineen said.
ICE has denied these allegations, saying detainees are provided three meals a day and medical care. Morelle said Ramos Jimenez had no issues with conditions in Batavia.
“You know, I asked Omar, I took the tour, and I asked him if he had complaints. He had none. He really wanted to focus on his case and about his desire to be free and be back home,” Morelle said.
“This is not what America signed up for. Even people having concerns about the border, what they were told was something. That’s not what’s happening. This is far more insidious,” Morelle said.
News10NBC reached out to the ICE office in Buffalo for comment but has not heard back.
