A man is facing murder charges in connection with a gruesome murder that left a 34-year-old Illinois woman dead more than 30 years ago.
The Madison County Sheriff’s office announced Wednesday that 70-year-old Albert “Buddy” Zigler, of Caseyville, Illinois, now faces first-degree murder charges in the cold case killing that stumped investigators for decades.
Randy Gail Sperino was bludgeoned to death, her body dumped in a field in unincorporated Granite city in 1993.
“Despite the passage of more than three decades, investigators remained committed to pursuing justice in this case. Through the dedicated and persistent efforts of investigators over the years, sufficient evidence was developed to support first-degree murder charges against Zigler,” the sheriff’s office wrote on social media.
Sperino’s son stood beside authorities as they announced the charges this week.
“We were honored to stand today with Wes Sperino, the victim’s son, and Sheriff Jeff Connor to announce first-degree murder charges filed against Albert L. ‘Buddy’ Zigler, 70, of Caseyville in connection with the 1993 killing of Randy Gail Sperino,” Madison County State’s Attorney Thomas Haine said.
