Food truck owners struggling with spike in gas prices amid busy season in Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The spike in gas prices amid the war with Iran is forcing food truck owners to make tough decisions about their businesses.

Rochester’s average gas price hit $4.57 per gallon on Wednesday, according to AAA, three cents lower than last week but 38 cents higher than a month ago. News10NBC’s Kristi Blake spoke with multiple food truck owners who say filling their large trucks costs between $150 and $200 per tank. Many of these businesses operate more than one truck, which adds up quickly. Michael Zazzaro, owner of Chef’s Family of Brands, said the increase in gas prices is cutting into profits.

“It’s a pretty absorbent amount. If you look at it on a weekly or monthly basis, I mean, we have multiple trucks, multiple vans, and, you know, running all of those vehicles,” Zazzaro said. “It does become quite the cost increase. So it’s probably $40 to $50 each vehicle increase we’ve seen per week.”

Lou DiMarco, owner of Wraps on Wheels and Roc Boulevard Truck, said his bills are up about 10 to 15%, but he’s not raising his prices yet.

Gas prices have remained above $4.50 a gallon for some time now. Owners said they’re working harder for less money and hoping for a significant drop in prices because, while they don’t want to raise prices, they need to stay afloat.

Food truck owners are getting creative to save money. They’re cutting ingredients differently and using items they may not have used before to create new dishes. Rob Loncoa, a food truck owner, said his business is now focusing on closer events instead of traveling to Buffalo or Syracuse.

“We have to be kind of more strategic with the events that we pick and choose to do. We obviously do. We’re doing closer events versus, like, we used to go to Buffalo or maybe Syracuse, and we’re not really doing that anymore as much,” Loncoa said.

Zazzaro said he fills the trucks up when they get halfway full, so it’s not as big a hit to the bank account every time they go to the pump.
