Air quality in the Chicago area Wednesday and even into Thursday was expected to be at unhealthy levels, the National Weather Service said, with an alert issued for nearly all of northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana.

The poor air quality alert follows a similar one issued by the NWS Tuesday, saying “the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has determined that an Air Pollution Action Day will be declared for the greater Chicago Metropolitan Area through Wednesday Night.”
Early Wednesday morning, air quality in the Chicago area ranked as “moderate,” or level two of six on the EPA’s AirNow air quality scale. Later in the afternoon, the air quality was expected to worsen and move into the “Unhealthy for sensitive groups” category, or level three.
“A Chicago area Air Pollution Action Day is declared when weather conditions are such that widespread ozone and or particulate levels are expected to be at or above the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category of the Air Quality Index for multiple days. Ozone is expected to be the primary pollutant of concern,” the NWS said in its alert. “Active children and adults, especially people with pulmonary or respiratory disease such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor activity.”
NBC 5 Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes explained that air quality alerts highlighting ozone occur because of a chemical reaction from sunlight and pollutants, and is typically seen in urban areas.
“Ground ozone can irritate throat more quickly cause coughing and irritated throat,” Jeanes said, adding that ozone is often lower in the mornings.
The alert comes amid a stretch of warm and windy weather in the Chicago area, with high temperatures in the mid 80s expected Wednesday and wind gusts as high as 25 mph. Along the lake, temperatures will be cooler, a beach hazard in effect, with wave highs between four and seven feet.
