Mick Schumacher’s ‘insane’ Indy 500 debut earns rookie honors

For Mick Schumacher, the Indianapolis 500 was never going to be just another race weekend. It was 200 laps of noise, nerves, near-misses and discovery -- and by the end of it, the German walked away exhausted, wide-eyed, and officially crowned Indy 500 Rookie of the Year.

Driving the No. 47 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Dalara-Honda, Schumacher tackled the most intimidating challenge of his young IndyCar career with no previous Speedway racing experience.

Starting 27th, the former Formula 1 driver quietly worked his way through the chaos of the early stages of the event , climbing as high as fifth during pit cycles before finishing 18th on the lead lap.

It was enough to beat fellow rookies Dennis Hauger, Jack Abel and Caio Collet, the latter briefly leading the race before crashing, and secure the honorary Rookie of the Year title along with a $50,000 bonus.

But statistics barely captured Schumacher’s amazement at what he had just experienced.

“I understand where people come from when they say this is the greatest spectacle in racing,” Schumacher told RACER. “It definitely is insane, amazing to be a part of this, and yeah, simply blown away by this event.”

A race of survival – and one wall tap

Schumacher’s afternoon was not entirely clean. Late in the race, he brushed the wall but kept going to the finish, ending up as Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s second-best finisher behind two-time Indy winner Takuma Sato in 10th.

“We're a bit unfortunate with the yellows,” Schumacher added. “I think without them, we would have been right in there.

“I think top 10 was definitely on the cards; we kept it clean, that's what we wanted to do, and obviously, yes, the last bit there, when we hit the wall…hey, how many can say they finished the Indy 500 and hit the wall, right?”

One of Schumacher’s standout moments came when he aggressively passed race leader – and eventual winner – Felix Rosenqvist to un-lap himself, a move that instantly made highlight reels.

"I loved that one, even if it was to un-lap myself, but hey, you gotta take what you can get,” he said.

    Overwhelmed by the spectacle

Beyond the racing itself, Schumacher admitted the scale of Indianapolis left a lasting impression, especially the famed pre-race ceremonies in front of more than 300,000 fans.

The former Haas F1 driver was also captivated by the moment Black Hawk helicopters thundered around the Speedway just above the 33-car field ahead of the green flag.

"They were low, I could tell you -- I felt that in the car. It was shaking around, so it was pretty impressive to see that."
