The Women’s cricket team of Meghalaya has been in a stage of controversy because of allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct surfaced from members of the state's Under-23 women's cricket team.
The incident, which has been kept in a cold room for months now, has raised questions on players’ safety, institutional accountability, and the structural concerns of the state’s cricket governing body.
It has been widely reported that the cricketers raised the allegations months ago, but no one bothered to take the allegations on a serious note. The matter has been exposed as it has drawn the attention of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women.
As soon as it came into the light, the Commission summoned officials of the Association to know whether any action had been taken to handle the situation. The accused individuals have also been summoned to explain the matter.

Who are the accused persons involved in the Meghalaya U-23 women's cricket team?
According to the allegations, some members of the team's support staff are accused of inappropriate conduct, verbal harassment, and objectionable communication through private messaging platforms.
Meghalaya Monitor has quoted Lamonlang Syiem, who is in charge of the four-member commission, to know the current scenario regarding the matter. Syeim reportedly heard the views of Meghalaya Cricket Association honorary secretary Raynold Kharkamni, former president Naba Bhattacharjee, and manager Shining Star Lyngdoh on Tuesday (May 26).
“We have to hear one more person, following which we would be able to conclude the hearing”, Syiem quoted by the news website.
The media report further mentioned, “When contacted, those who attended the hearing refused to divulge their submissions before the commission.
“We will wait for the report of the commission”, they said.
“What message does this send to parents who want their daughters to pursue cricket?” Sangma questioned.”
It is also reported that allegations by the state women cricketers remained far from a conclusion as the former treasurer Dhrubajyoti Thakuria was out of station.
Another local media from the state, The Meghalayan Express, has published the quotes of the MCA President James P.K. Sangma, who accused some of the office bearers of the association of hiding the matter under the carpet.
The President of the state cricket governing body opens his mouth
“Sexual harassment, in any form and in any setting, be it a sports association or any other institution or organisation, is completely unacceptable,” Sangma wrote in the statement.
“Feigning ignorance in the name of elections when a larger matter was at hand, misleading everyone when to date no inquiry was conducted, or even a basic response given to complainants, tells the larger story of what the MCA has been and continues to be for some people in it.”
According to The Meghalayan Express report, Sangma further mentioned, “If the trust is broken, we don’t just lose one girl, but every girl she would have inspired. The pipeline for the future dries up even before it begins.”
