In Monaco, athletes were able to earn an extra €600 for breaking the Monaco meet record and an additional €750 if they also broke the overall Mare Nostrum record. There were five records broken in Monaco, and all five athletes, including Steenbergen, broke both records for a total of €1,350.
Steenbergen also had the benefit of winning both of her events including the “speed tournament” in the 50 freestyle, which was worth €600 rather than the typical €350 she won for her 100 freestyle.
