ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A 53-year-old woman from North Lauderdale pleaded guilty to her role in a bank fraud scheme.
Renee Thompson pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States. According to prosecutors, in April 2023, a company in Western New York mailed a $12,914 check to a vendor in Florida.
Prosecutors say Thompson or a co-conspirator stole that check and altered it, making it payable to Thompson. She later deposited the check into an account under her name.
Between July and August 2023, prosecutors say Thompson or her co-conspirators used the company’s name, bank information, and signature to create 16 more fraudulent checks. They say Thompson and her co-conspirators deposited the checks to get over $205,000 from the WNY company.
In June of the same year, prosecutors say Thompson deposited two more counterfeit checks that totaled over $7,000 into an account in her name.
Thompson is set to be sentenced in September. She faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of $250,000. Prosecutors say she also agreed to pay restitution totaling $28,500.
