It is a do-or-die Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals for the Colorado Avalanche, but it did not feel that way from the team’s vibe after morning skate.

“It’s good. Good, ready to play. That’s about all we can do at this point, and nothing to lose. So we’re ready to go,” Nazem Kadri said.

The Avalanche maintained a balance of fun and lightheartedness while dialing it in when it was time to get serious throughout the regular season and the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

“It’s good. There’s no shying away from it. Our backs are against the wall here. We had a good day, just to kind of reset yesterday. Had a good talk as a group. We just got to keep our mind focused on this one, not look far ahead, and just got to go out there and play our game,” Parker Kelly said.

Head coach Jared Bednar confirmed that Nathan MacKinnon will play and Mackenzie Blackwood is starting in net. Valeri Nichushkin is a game-time decision.

“Mackenzie’s the type of guy and goalie that plays better when he’s loose and confident, and he’s been doing the work to make sure that he’s ready and prepared,” Bednar said.

The team is confident they can win and is focused on being at the top of its game heading into Game 4 at T-Mobile Arena.

“For us, it’s to go out there and play the best we can. The message is pretty clear. Obviously, our backs are against the wall, and we just got to go out there, play loose, and try to feel good about our game,” Cale Makar said.

“It’s not where you want to be in a series like this, but again, you got to take it day by day — treat this one a little different than the normal.”

‘I’m confident that we’ll be ready’: How Avs head coach Jared Bednar has prepared his team for Game 4

Bednar said the team had an open conversation last night to help get it mentally prepared.

“I like the energy in our room. I like the vibe around the team. We had a good meeting yesterday, touched up on a few things this morning on video. I’m confident that we’ll be ready to come out and try to better our performance from the other night. Doesn’t guarantee a win, but I think that our guys’ heads are in the right spot and got nothing to lose now. So there’s a looseness around our team this morning,” Bednar said.

“Today we went over some tactical stuff, but yesterday we talked about perspective. What that looks like, and what’s the story that we’re telling ourselves in our head to be ready to go and talk with some of our motivations, and what drives us deep down more than just we want to win a Stanley Cup. What is it to try and get our guys thinking the right way and making sure we’re digging deep tonight.”

Ever since they won the Stanley Cup, the Avalanche have not lost the first potential elimination game in any year.

This team has focused on what it can control and not worry about what it can’t. It’s time to breathe deep and focus on playing a full 60 minutes at its best to stay in the fight.
