Lanes on the busy Borman Expressway (I-80/94) in northwest Indiana near the Illinois state line were blocked during the busy Tuesday morning commute after a traffic stop ended in an officer-involved shooting, with state and local police on scene as an investigation continues.
The incident unfolded just after midnight near Indianapolis Boulevard in Hammond, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office in Indiana said, as deputies responded to provide backup for the Indiana State Police during a traffic stop in the eastbound lanes of I-80/94.
Two Lake County Sheriff’s Department police officers involved were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation, authorities said. Once they are released, they will be placed on paid administrative leave as is department policy.
Lane closures in both directions of I/80-94 were expected to last for an “extended period of time” Tuesday morning, the sheriff’s office said, and drivers were advised to avoid the area.
The closures were leading to nearly three-mile long traffic impact, NBC 5 traffic reporter Kye Martin said, with solid traffic from the Illinois-Indiana state line. On the eastbound side, closures were impacting drivers coming in from Munster towards Hammond, with I-80/94 closed from Indianapolis Boulevard to Kennedy Avenue.
On the westbound said, one lane was blocked as part of the investigation.
Photos and video from the scene showed multiple police cars blocking parts of the expressway, with dozens evidence markers and heavy traffic backed up.
According to officials, the Indiana State Police is the lead agency investigating the incident.
