Chicago lawmakers mull targeting parents of teens involved in ‘takeovers

Some Chicago City Council members are gearing up to take on parents of teens who get arrested during illegal takevovers past curfew.

The proposal comes as the city reels from a takeover on the Near West Side that nearly turned deadly for a number of police officers Sunday morning.

Police officials say an 18-year-old is in custody after allegedly plowing his vehicle into a group of police officers trying to break up an early Sunday morning teen takeover near Roosevelt and Loomis.

Chicago police said five officers were taken to hospitals with injuries after the crash, and are currently in fair condition. According to 2nd Ward Alderman Brian Hopkins, some have broken bones.

“The car was going at least 20, possibly close to 30 miles an hour when it hit those officers who had no warning at all,” Hopkins told NBC 5 Chicago.

Hopkins said the gathering was full of underage kids. He says it’s past time to hold parents accountable, using a law that classifies the crime of “contributing to the delinquency of a minor” as a Class A Misdeamenor.

“And that’s when parents allow their minor children to commit crimes. So the laws are already on the books. They need to be enforced,” Hopkins said.

He says he and City Council colleagues are drafting an ordinance that would give police the tools to go after parents of teenagers who take part in illegal gatherings.

“All that combined sends a strong message that we are no longer going to tolerate this kind of activity. We need the mayor to step up and stand with us on it. Tough talk is fine, but that doesn’t seem to change anything,” he said.

Monday morning, Mayor Brandon Johnson put a public statement out condemning this weekend’s violence – and calling for parental accountability. But later following his Memorial Day wreath-laying event, the mayor stopped short of endorsing a new ordinance.

“Parents, we have to know where our children. And I believe that if all of us come together to ensure that our young people are not being exposed to, these unauthorized gatherings, that can be dangerous,” Johnson said.

There have been several shootings already this weekend including a mass shooting in Little Village. As of Monday evening, CPD has recorded zero homicides for the weekend, with final numbers expected by Tuesday morning.
