A Wauconda man is dead after getting electrocuted while trimming trees near overhead power lines, with officials calling the death an “unfortunate accident.”
The incident unfolded about 4 p.m. Saturday, when Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Wauconda Fire District responded to the area of Bonner Road and Jackson Avenue for reports of downed power lines and an unresponsive man.
When first responders arrived, they found power lines actively arcing in the trees, with the victim, located approximately 15 feet above the ground. According to authorities, electrical service to the area had to be shut off before crews could safely access him.
A preliminary investigation suggests the victim, a 67-year-old man from unincorporated Wauconda, was on a ladder trimming trees near overhead power lines when a branch was believed to have come into contact with a live wire. The man was electrocuted from the live wire, the investigation shows, and was pronounced dead at the scene, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division Detectives and the Lake County Coroner’s Office responded and are conducting an investigation, officials said.
