Since her arrival on the soap back in 2008, Whitney has been at the center of some of EastEnders' most tragic storylines. This began with her hard-hitting sexual abuse storyline by her pseudo-stepfather, Tony King (Chris Coghill), which led her on a path of sexual exploitation and bad impulsive decisions.
Her exit storyline kicked off with a one-night stand with Zack, which resulted in a pregnancy. The storyline took a tragic turn when their daughter was diagnosed with Edwards syndrome, a genetic disorder in which they were told their child would not survive after birth. Thus, the decision was made to terminate the pregnancy.
Throughout the storyline, Zack and Whitney become a legitimate couple and eventually have another child together, Dolly.
However, all is not set up for happily ever after, as during the couple's wedding, it is revealed that Zack cheated on Whitney and had a one-night stand with her best friend, Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa).
Deciding it was time to start fresh, Whitney packed her things and left Walford to live with her half-brother, Ryan Malloy (Neil McDermott).
It is currently unknown whether Whitney's return was a one-off appearance or the start of a future storyline. Fans will have to stay tuned to see how the story develops.
