ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Several people got some exercise for a good cause in the Seviyn Strong Heterotaxy Awareness Walk earlier on Sunday.
It took place at the Roundhouse Shelter at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester. People wore blue shirts with Seviyn Strong written on them.
Heterotaxy is a rare birth defect that involves the heart and other organs being abnormally arranged. Seviyn’s parents said people walked for the cause because she survived it and most babies don’t.
“Along this journey I’ve met a lot of moms who have dealt with heterotaxy, who either terminated their pregnancy because they were told that their baby wouldn’t live, or they have navigation this process without no one knowing that their baby has this very rare condition. It’s so rare that it’s not, right? So many people carry it, they just don’t talk about it. And I just wanna create a space where they can, and we can walk it together,” said Breonna Orum, Seviyn’s mother.
Seviyn’s parents said the community showed up to help them when they needed it. The experience has been amazing, they said.
