Perfecting the ‘Beauty Routine’: Live and Local with Superintendo! ...Middle East

Luke West and Mike Tyrrell of the band Superintendo stopped by Live & Local last week, following the release of their debut full-length album “Beauty Routine.”

First formed in 2023, Superintendo’s been releasing music for just a year – but they’ve already established themselves as a major player in Chapel Hill’s pop/punk/ska scene. (As their online bio nicely puts it, “they play both genres: fast and slow.”) But while the band has only been around a short while, West and Tyrrell have known each other a lot longer.

“Luke and I went to punk rock high school,” Tyrrell jokes. “We met in the skate park when we were both 13 – rolling to the gas stations, trying to get adults to buy us cigarettes, just the humor that comes with not taking yourself seriously at all when you’re around a good friend and a skateboard – (and) it’s just kind of evolved through the years.”

But it wasn’t until recently that the two friends forged the musical partnership that turned into Superintendo.

“I was making songs in my bedroom and sending them to Mike, who plays drums,” says West. “And Mike suggested we formalize the matter and create a band.”

The result, three years later, is “Beauty Routine”: pop-punk with substance, ten powerhouse tracks that blend catchy, fast, driving melodies with real lyrical depth (and the occasional direct foray into politics, as in “God Save the Billionaires”). “The archetype of the band is joking around, but there’s sincere stuff on there,” West says.

Tyrrell agrees. “I think people always are looking for an outlet through music, (and) music is really good at drawing out an emotional reaction,” he says. “Just being young, and in the pit, and hearing lyrics that you relate to … you know, punk rock is super-radical and it’s fast and it’s all-inclusive – in most cases – and I think when you can connect to people where they can release that emotion in a non-judgmental way, like in the middle of like a mosh pit…there’s something special about that.”

“Beauty Routine” has only been out for a month, but Superintendo is already gearing up for their next venture: a second album due out later this year, recorded in Little Eden in Asbury Park, New Jersey (“like sacred ground for us,” says West) and produced by the Bouncing Souls’ Pete Steinkopf.

All part of the master plan, says West.

“You know, the impetus of the band (was) ‘let’s do this, but let’s try to do it in a way to where we actually make a shot at playing bigger places and far-away places and meeting a ton of people and having fun,’” he says. “That’s the main point of it all: have fun, you know. Everybody’s aging, it tends to happen – so I want to make sure that when you’re laying on your deathbed and the slideshow is going, you know, that there’s some really cool shows in there that got to play. That’s the goal for us.”

Luke West and Mike Tyrrell stopped by Live & Local to discuss “Beauty Routine” and play three tracks: “Inhaling Confetti,” “Sporting Life,” and “God Save the Billionaires.” Listen:
