Purdy is a better pocket passer and processor than Garoppolo ever was. He’s not nearly as athletic as Lance, but he still can scramble to extend players and find solutions even when the play design does not initially hold the answers.
Is he Mahomes? Absolutely not. Should teams emulate the 49ers’ approach and reel back the athletic profile that have led to misses in Lance, Anthony Richardson, Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, and others? Probably, and we are already seeing the fruits of that shift.
Because when the Los Angeles Rams decided it was time to draft a quarterback this offseason, their needle did not move towards the prospects that check every box from an athletic profile standpoint: Drew Allar or Taylen Green. Instead LA opted Ty Simpson, who draws closer comparisons to Purdy in the fact he’s a strong processor and excels more in the mental aspects of the game rather than physical.
The selection of Simpson signals multiple truths: (1) the NFL has re-aimed its target at the quarterback position in terms of what they value coming out of college, and (2) Sean McVay must admire what Purdy has done with the 49ers and is using that as a mold for the future of the Rams.

The Rams aren’t chasing Mahomes, Josh Allen, or Matthew Stafford 2.0. Simpson does not have near the caliber of arm these players do, and he’s certainly not as mobile as Mahomes or Allen.
However, if Simpson is going to find success in Los Angeles, the path is very similar to how Purdy earned staying power in San Francisco. He must be able to find open receivers on second and third reads. When the defense seems to hold the answers initially, Simpson must be able to dip into his mobility and processing to find creative answers outside of what the scheme presented to him.
These are the traits that McVay is betting on with Simpson. Purdy is a proof of concept. The key distinctions are that (1) Purdy had much more playing experience coming out of Iowa State and Simpson was a one-year starter with injuries diminishing his performance over the second half of the season, and (2) Simpson was a first-round talent while Purdy was on the fringe of getting drafted at all. In some ways Purdy should be Simpson’s floor. This could give the Rams an advantage over a divisional foe whenever Stafford decides to call it a career.
In terms of replacing Matthew Stafford, Sean McVay could have found the next reclamation project similar to how the Seahawks rejuvenated Sam Darnold’s career. He could have attempted to replicate the elite quarterbacks in the NFL in Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, or Lamar Jackson. Instead, McVay set his sights on Brock Purdy and told the league how he really feels about his NFC West rivals. This is how the Rams landed on Ty Simpson.
