Michael Vaughan predicts Justin Langer’s exit as LSG head coach

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has questioned the future of head coach Justin Langer after Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) endured a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign. Vaughan raised concerns about whether the franchise management would continue with the current leadership group after the season.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated LSG by seven wickets at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Saturday, May 23. Chasing a target of 197 runs, the visiting team successfully reached the total in 18 overs. The Rishabh Pant-led team’s final position in the points table now depends on the result of the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) final match.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Michael Vaughan was asked about Justin Langer's future with LSG. He stated that while the squad may not have been strong enough to win the IPL title, repeated bottom-half finishes place major responsibility on the leadership group and coaching staff.

“You look at Justin Langer and Rishabh Pant now - seventh, seventh, and potentially tenth. In professional sport, those results bring pressure. You may not look at that squad and think it should win the IPL, but finishing last raises serious questions for the leadership group. That’s what they are paid for - to get the culture, ethics, and performances right.”

Lucknow Super Giants struggled badly during the 2026 season under captain Rishabh Pant. The team managed only four wins and suffered ten defeats in 14 league matches, finishing at the bottom of the points table after ending seventh in both the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

“Basically Five Chefs in the Kitchen” - Michael Vaughan Questions LSG Leadership Setup

The former England captain also discussed the structural complications within the current franchise setup. He explained that although Justin Langer strongly believes in hard work and team culture, the presence of multiple influential voices may have affected the team’s direction and strategy.

“I know Justin Langer really well. He strongly believes in hard work and team culture, but for whatever reason it just hasn’t worked. You’ve got Tom Moody, Kane Williamson, Justin Langer, Rishabh Pant, and then the owner. That’s basically five chefs in the kitchen,” Vaughan.

“Andy Flower Finishing Third With Probably Not the Best Squad at That Time” - Michael Vaughan

The veteran commentator also compared the current struggles with successful coaching performances from the past. He pointed out that former coach Andy Flower managed to guide a weaker squad to a third-place finish, stressing that great coaching is often about maximizing limited resources.

“Sometimes in sport, we only judge coaches on trophies. You look at Andy Flower finishing third with probably not the best squad at that time. That shows how good a coach can be. Jose Mourinho once said his biggest achievement was finishing second with Manchester United because he felt that squad was nowhere near good enough.”

Rishabh Pant also faced heavy criticism throughout the season. The wicketkeeper-batter failed to deliver consistent performances with the bat and could not justify the massive investment during the campaign. The franchise managed only 10 wins in 28 matches across the last two IPL seasons under Pant.
