Former Australia skipper and Punjab Kings (PBKS) head coach Ricky Ponting expressed disappointment with the team's players despite the team's win over the Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday.
PBKS beat LSG by 7 wickets and 2 overs to spare at the Bharat Ratna Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow to keep their playoffs hopes alive, although Punjab's destiny is not in their hands anymore.
PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer's decision to bowl first seemed to go a little awry as Josh Inglis took 16 runs off the very first over, bowled by Arshdeep Singh. Azmatullah Omarazai then dismissed Arshin Kulkarni off the first ball of the second over.
Nicholas Pooran, too, was unable to continue his newfound form, but Ayush Badoni laid into the Punjab bowlers. Badoni made 43 runs in a partnership of 49 with Inglis. Inglis continued his good form by smashing 72 in the end, and put up 65 with Rishabh Pant.
Abdul Samad made an unbeaten 37 to push life into the LSG innings and set a respectable 197 to PBKS.
Mohammed Shami sent Priyansh Arya packing on the first ball of the chase, and Cooper Connolly too fell shortly after. But Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer ensured that there were no other hiccups.
After Prabhsimran was dropped on 20 by Rishabh Pant off Arjun Tendulkar, he and Iyer made the most of the opportunity and put up 140 in around 12 overs. Arjun returned to trap his man in front, finally, but it was too little too late.
Iyer was racing against the scoreboard for his century, but eventually got there by hitting a six when he was batting on 94, and Punjab needed 3 runs to win.

After the match, PBKS Head Coach Ricky Ponting spoke to the broadcasters and rued his team's sloppiness in the field. Ponting felt that the Punjab fielders had given away around 20 runs more than they ideally should have.
“We've done it the hard way, let's put it that way. We've done what we needed to do today. Sloppy in the field again, gave them 20 more runs than what they should've got,” Ponting said.
Ponting was appreciative of Iyer and his maiden IPL century that won Punjab the match.
“Pretty clinical chase, especially being in trouble early. The captain has done that all season. When there's been a run chase on like that, he's pretty much every time put his hand up and got the job done. That's his first IPL century tonight. We'll celebrate that, and then we'll sit around and wait for those results tomorrow," he added.
Ponting also reflected on Punjab's season of two halves. Punjab were unbeaten in their 7 matches of the tournament before going on to lose six in a row and tanking their chances at the playoffs.
“The level of cricket we played in the first half was a level I've never seen before. And then we just made some crucial errors at different times in the last six games. Today was a whole lot better,” the PBKS coach said.

PBKS qualification scenario
After their season of two halves, the Punjab Kings are now depending on other results to send them through to the top four.
On Sunday, Punjab need the Rajasthan Royals to beat the Mumbai Indians and the Delhi Capitals to beat the Kolkata Knight Riders.
If RR beat MI instead, Punjab will be out. And if RR don't beat MI, but KKR beat DC, it will come down to an NRR battle between them and Punjab.
