A man remains jailed on charges connected to the shooting of former Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard’s father in North Lawndale earlier this year.
Cordale Carroll, 18, was arrested Thursday on the Near West Side and is charged with one count each of attempted murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm at an occupied vehicle, court records show. A Cook County judge ordered him held in custody at a detention hearing Saturday.
Henyard’s father, 65, was sitting in an alley and talking with a couple friends around 6 p.m. March 25 in the 1300 block of South Kedzie Avenue when Carroll and two other people approached them and Carroll fired shots, according to court records and a Chicago police report. No other arrests have been made in the shooting.
When the shots were fired, Henyard’s father was sitting on the trunk of his car and his two friends ran for cover behind cars, according to court records. Henyard’s father suffered a gunshot wound to his neck, and the bullet remains lodged in his shoulder.
“This tragedy has shaken my family to the core and unfortunately, it reflects a reality that far too many families across our state are facing,” Henyard said in a social media post after the shooting, identifying the victim as her father.
Henyard didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Saturday.
Surveillance cameras near the scene captured three people wearing masks walking down an alley toward Kedzie Avenue. After leaving the view of the camera, shots are heard and then the three are seen running back from the direction they came, court records say. At a couple points, Carroll is allegedly seen on camera with his face exposed and holding what appears to be a handgun.
Nine fired shell casings of 9mm and 45mm calibers were found at the shooting scene, according to court records.
Carroll was arrested in an unrelated unlawful possession of a firearm case April 5, when he was found with a 9mm handgun. He was released from custody and placed on electronic monitoring in that case, court records show.
According to prosecutors, ballistic testing on the firearm found April 5 showed it matched the shell casings found at the March 25 shooting scene.
Carroll, from North Lawndale, is due back in court Friday.
Henyard, mayor of Dolton from 2021 to 2025, was the center of several investigations into her conduct in office.
The Village of Dolton hired former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot in 2024 to conduct a noncriminal investigation into Henyard. Her report found that Henyard mismanaged Dolton’s finances through “excessive” spending and hid financial information from trustees and the public.
Henyard, who was elected Dolton mayor and Thornton Township trustee as a Democrat, has since moved to Georgia, where she is running as a Republican for a Fulton County, Georgia, commissioner seat.
With no opponent, she won Tuesday’s Republican primary election for that seat.
