PERINTON, N.Y. — The Fairport Veterans of Foreign Wars Post spent Saturday cleaning local cemeteries ahead of Memorial Day.
News10NBC’s Declan Stablow was at one of those cemeteries on Wilkinson Road in Perinton. The VFW wanted the veteran graves to look their best for Memorial Day.
Volunteers spread soil and cleaned off brush and trees. Professional masons were also on site to fix damaged and sinking headstones.
Jay Edgerton with the VFW said despite the weather, he was very happy with the turnout. Close to 100 people showed up.
Edgerton said this work is important because headstones eventually get neglected.
“So they get forgotten about. Nobody’s around to take care of them, clean them, fix them. So, you know, if we can get to a place where they’re there, they’ve been at least brought back to where some place is that is recognizable and readable. So you can see who they were, what they did when they died, and when they might have served. Then, you know, they’re not forgotten,” Edgerton said.
Volunteers made sure to use cleaning products approved by the National Park Service that don’t damage the tombstones. Organizers said this cleanup is part of a five-year project that will address eight cemeteries throughout Perinton.
