The new-look lineup was as lifeless as ever today, achieving exactly zero runs for the seventh time this season.
For a little reference, the Cubs were shut out just ten times total all of last season. For some more, the 2026 Cubs have already been shut out more times (by May 23) than the 2016 Cubs were in a full season … not that these guys deserve to be mentioned in the same breath at the moment.
Anyway, that’s five straight series losses and seven straight losses overall, which has me thinking about how many teams in history have TWO ten-game winning streaks AND a ten-game losing streak in the same season (let alone before the end of May). Can’t be many, if any. Let’s hope we just don’t find out.
Colin Rea, who we’ll call the Ankin Law “Making it Personal” Player of the Game (because who else is it going to be?), ultimately had a beter day than how it looked to be developing early on. He served up two homers to Christian Walker, but that was pretty much it. There were some nice defensive plays sprinkled throughout (PCA, Nico) to help keep him efficient enough for his line to look good at the end, but that’s how you’re meant to use this defense. So, no points deducted.
Offensively, yeah. There was nothing going on. The Cubs managed a grand total of two hits before Alex Bregman’s two-out, bases-empty single in the ninth inning. The first was a 78 MPH infield pop-up off the bat of Dansby Swanson. The second was a line drive single from PCA, who was promptly thrown out stealing second. Besides three scattered walks throughout the game, that was it.
At some point, they will win again. But this as dire of a stretch offensively as I can remember. Total lifelessness. Total futility.
