Rohit Sharma had picked up a hamstring injury last month and did go on to miss 5 matches for the team, due to the same issue. Cut to the present situation, the former MI skipper is being used as an impact sub; doesn’t spend time in the field, and is brought in when it’s MI’s turn to bat. That raises a few concerns, if he is 100% fit as yet or not..
BCCI vs MI on Rohit Sharma’s fitness?
ON Saturday, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene clarified, that the team was a bit cautious over his fitness in the first match upon return, but since then, the decision to use him as impact sub, has been more to do with the team combination. At a pre-match conference vs RR, he said, “According to me, according to our medical team, Rohit is 100%. After coming back from hamstring injury, first game we were bit cautious. Now is playing as an Impact Sub just for team combination. He is team player, he perfectly understands it.”
Will Rohit play in World Cup 2027?
So, what is the confusion really, one would ask? Well, it was only a few days back, the Indian team for the Afghanistan ODIs was announced and Rohit Sharma found a place, albeit with an asterisk. The only condition left to be fulfilled is, he needs to clear the BCCI fitness test, before being able to play for the team. That is because, there is a report doing the rounds, that the BCCI is not fully convinced with his fitness levels, especially looking ahead at the World Cup.
As per the Times of India, the main concerns lie in his body’s ability to face the rigours of 50 overs. “Rohit didn’t report to the BCCI’s centre of excellence (CoE) for those three weeks. He has become lean but there are concerns about his body being able to take the load of high-performance sport. He has to field for 50 overs. ODI cricket doesn’t have the option of an Impact Player like IPL. Body takes time to heal when you are so close to turning 40,” a BCCI source had told TOI.

As it is Jaiswal hasn’t got enough game time. Ishan has been picked so that he can double up as an opener. But if Rohit fails to make it to the World Cup and either Shubman Gill or Jaiswal gets injured, there needs to be another opener ready,” added the source.
So, who is to be believed here? In a way, the ODI team needs Rohit, who has played 282 ODIs, and scored 11,577 runs at an average of almost 49, including 33 tons. But maybe not at the expense of the team, if he is not a 100%. In short, the BCCI and the player in question need to sit down together, and chart down a plan until the next WC in October 2027. Till then, the mystery only continues.
