Season 1 of Boston Blueends tonight, bringing Danny Reagan’s (Donnie Wahlberg) transfer from the NYPD to the Boston PD to a finality. It's an action-packed episode that at first appears to have a happy ending but quickly turns into a cliffhanger.
“For us, so much of this season was a journey of getting Danny established in a new place and getting to unpack his partner Lena's [Sonequa Martin-Green] biggest regret,” executive producer Brandon Margolis tells Parade. “For Danny by the end of the season, having him fully surrounded by a family that he's chosen, so ending the season with him not just with Sean at the [Silver's] table but with another member of the Reagan family there and having this sense of community felt like the natural climax to what he'd been building towards all season, which was stating and claiming his place.”

We won’t spoil which member of the Reagan family shows up in the season finale, but let’s just say that it ties in nicely with his new partner Lena Silver’s story, and brings context that helps her as she works to resolve a major issue.
“For Lena, we explored with her, her biggest regret in never having known her father,” Margolis continues. “What did it look like for someone who was in such a powerful, loving family that was also a bit blended? What happens when she discovers the other part of the family she's never known, and can they coexist? So, going on that journey for them is really — for us when we came into Season 1 — our tent post of where we need to be emotional by the end of this season.”
Also, for the finale, Margolis and executive producer Brandon Sonnier decided to have a little fun. In real life, in order to fully transfer over from another department to the Boston PD, the transferring officer has to do a short period of time as a patrol officer, so they paired up Danny with his rookie son Sean (Mika Amonsen).
“You can't skip directly to detective. And so Danny, has owed that for several episodes,” Sonnier explains. “He's owed that patrol time. So, we thought what a great way to end the season then to take Danny back to the beginning and have a little fun by letting Sean technically outrank him for a little bit, and so that's how we end up with Danny on patrol, Danny in uniform, being stopped in his tracks by Sean saying, ‘Hey I'm going to tell you how we do things today.’”

And Margolis adds, “Danny came to this city for Sean, because Sean was injured. He stayed for Sean, so he has been looking out for him all season, and it felt really sweet and sort of fitting that the season would end with him partnered with Sean. Them doing the job together was a really fun opportunity for us.”

Seeing the two working together away from the shadow of both NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) and former NYPD Commissioner Henry Reagan (Len Cariou) in Season 1 is setting the two Reagans up for the second season of Boston Blue, which will continue their journey.
“They have discovered that doing the job outside the looming shadow of their family legacy has sort of changed things for them, and it gives them opportunities that they maybe hadn't considered before, such as Danny thinking about climbing the ladder and knowing that his father's not at the top of this anymore,” Margolis says. “Or for Sean, who has carved his own path away from his family in a new city, how does he take to this job, and how is he responding to it? How is he showing he's worthy of the Reagan name? So, it is sort of a fun trailblazing movement for them.”
Boston Blue airs Friday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. Streams next day on Paramount+.
