Agatha Christie, the queen of crime, is known for her bestselling novels like And Then There Were None and Murder on the Orient Express. However, those aren’t her only stories worth reading. The author published over 60 novels over the course of her career, many of which were adapted into films. Looper recently ranked those movies, and a forgotten film from 1982 made the list. It was called Evil Under the Sun.
This movie, which was based on Christie’s 1941 novel of the same name, starred the famous detective, Hercule Poirot. It followed him as he investigated the murder of an actress at a Balkan resort. In classic whodunnit form, there are several suspects with a shocking twist at the end.

Peter Ustinov, an award-winning actor and director, played Poirot in this film. It was his second time portraying the character, after starring in Death on the Nile in 1978, which he called his favorite of the mystery films. He also played the detective in Thirteen at Dinner, Dead Man's Folly, Murder in Three Acts, and Appointment with Death.
When asked what it was like playing Poirot in an interview withThe Strand Magazine, he said, “If you treat it strictly as a character part, I enjoyed that tremendously. But he seems to get kicks in life out of lipreading at 200 yards and I’ve always required something more solid than that. Also he’s a confirmed bachelor, which I’m not, having been married three times. He’s never risked it. He prefers to be pernickety about his crème de cacao, or whatever he drinks after lunch.”
Roger Ebert, one of the most successful movie critics in the world, praised the film. He said, “There are delicious moments in the final fifteen minutes of Evil Under The Sun, but what I especially liked about this Christie were the opening scenes.”
A reviewer on Reddit agreed, saying, “Love it, quite possibly the only film adaptation I like more than the book as far as Christie is concerned.”
