An incident at a northwest Indiana hospital has sparked a heavy police response and closed part of the hospital Friday morning.
Just after 8:15 a.m. Friday, the Michigan City Police Department alerted residents to “please avoid the area of Franciscan Hospital in Michigan City until further notice due to police activity.”
The LaPorte County Sheriff’s office then confirmed “an incident transpired at Franciscan Health Hospital – Michigan City Campus.”
“This was an isolated incident and there is no immediate threat to the public,” the sheriff’s office wrote in its update.
Indiana State Police were also called to the scene.
Franciscan Health said its emergency department was put under an ambulance bypass, “but walk-in patients are being accepted through the main entrance to the hospital.” Medical offices onsite were closed, but all other departments remained open.
“The health and safety of our patients and staff is always our top priority. There is no active threat to patients, staff or the community at this time,” the hospital said in a statement.
Indiana State Police are expected to give an update on the situation “as soon as possible.”
