Boaters in Rochester looking for ways to adapt to rising fuel costs ahead of Memorial Day weekend

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The rising fuel prices amid the war with Iran are impacting more than drivers. Some boaters are working to adapt to a higher cost of fueling up ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

News10NBC’s Kristi Blake spoke with boaters at Shumway Marina near the Genesee River about the rising costs. Gas on the water is always more expensive than at regular stations, usually around four or five dollars, but prices have climbed even higher this season. Most boaters acknowledged the increase but said it won’t keep their boats docked. Even sailboat owners, who typically use less gas, are feeling the impact of higher prices.

“We can go out sailing. But when the wind doesn’t blow, then we’re running the engine just like everybody else. So maybe not as big as powerboats, but it’s still an impact,” Jack Morris said.

Morris said marine diesel cost about $5.50 per gallon last season. It now costs $6.50 per gallon. Being on a sailboat gives Morris a little more flexibility with gas usage, but it means he’ll be paying closer attention to the weather before pulling the boat out. Potentially nasty weather is expected this weekend.

Boaters are split on whether the weather will keep them away. Some said they’ve been enjoying the last few days and plan to take this weekend off, while others are still hitting the water. To save money on gas, boaters can adjust their speed and avoid rough conditions.

“Speed is the thing. And then, whether if they have to fight big waves, then they’re going to be using more gas. And if they’re going fast, they’re going to be using more gas,” Morris said.

One woman gassing up her sailboat for a trip from Rochester to Sodus Bay said the prices aren’t too bad for the amount of gas they use. She spent Thursday on the water and plans to do maintenance and work on her dock this weekend instead of boating.
