Ruturaj Gaikwad, entire CSK penalised after loss to GT, getting knocked out of IPL 2026

Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and the team have been penalised following their 89-run defeat to the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Thursday. The five-time champions became the latest side to be knocked out of the IPL 2026 as they failed to chase down the 230-run target set by GT. Adding to their misery, the entire team has been handed a fine for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct.

Gaikwad, CSK penalised

As per a press release, Ruturaj Gaikwad and the CSK team have been fined after the team was found maintaining a slow-over rate in the game against GT. While the CSK captain has been fined Rs 24 lakhs, the rest of the playing XI will be fined Rs 6 lakhs or 25% of their match fee. This is the second time in this season that CSK have been found maintaining a slow-over rate.

“As this was his team’s second offence (first offence in Match 18) of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Gaikwad was fined INR 24 lakhs. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser,” the release stated.

Over rate is the average number of overs bowled by the fielding side in an hour of play. According to ICC’s rules, teams are expected to maintain an average of 15 overs per hour in Test Cricket, 14.28 in ODIs and 14.11 in T20s.

In IPL, including the two strategic timeouts, which last for two minutes and 30 seconds, the bowling side is expected to maintain an over rate of 14.11 and finish their quota of 20 overs in one hour and 30 minutes, barring any delays due to weather or any such unforeseen circumstances.

For the second offence in a season, the captain of the bowling team will be fined INR 24 lakhs and the other 10 players will either be fined six lakhs or 25% of their match fees, depending on which amount is lesser.

For the third and each subsequent offence in a season, the captain of the bowling team will be fined 30 lakhs and will also be banned for one match. The other 10 players in the team will also be fined 12 lakhs or 50% of their match fees, depending on which amount is lesser.
