Iconic 70s Band With Bestselling Classic Rock Album of All Time Just Hit a New Low on the Charts

If there's one classic rock band that knows what it feels like to be successful, it would definitely be the Eagles. Even some of the most popular bands in history can't compare to their track record: Over the course of their years as a band, they've racked up a total of five #1 hits and 10 Top 10 hits overall — and the Eagles' 1976 compilation album Their Greatest Hits remains the bestselling classic rock album of all time.

Of course, not every record can be a major hit, even for the Eagles...who just experienced a new career low, according to Forbes.

A recently reissued deluxe edition of their 1975 studio album, One Of These Nights, debuted at #26 on this week's Official Vinyl Albums chart — making it the first release by the Eagles to not break the top 10 on that chart, which ranks the bestselling projects on vinyl across all genres in the U.K. (Previously, Hotel California and Hell Freezes Over peaked at #10 in 2015 and 2019, respectively.)

Also this week, One of These Nights dropped to #43 on the list of the top-selling albums on any physical format in the U.K., and #46 on the Official Albums Sales roster.

Don Henley called 'One of These Nights' a 'great showcase for high harmony'

In a 2003 interview with Cameron Crowe, Don Henley reflected on the inspirations behind the title track on One of These Nights.

"We’d started to explore our love of rhythm & blues and the Gamble & Huff records that came out of Philadelphia," Henley recalled.

"We were also huge fans of Al Green," he continued. "Glenn [Frey] was the catalyst for this song. I think he sat down with a guitar and started playing that rhythm part. It was another song from the 'Lyin’ Eyes' house. We like to call it our 'satanic country-rock period.' Because it was a dark time, both politically and musically, in America. There was turmoil in Washington and disco music was starting to take off. We thought, 'Well, how can we write something with that flavor, with that kind of beat, and still have the dangerous guitars?' We wanted to capture the spirit of the times."

The resulting song, "One of These Nights," ended up being a "great showcase for high harmony."

"Meisner hit some notes that only dogs could hear," Henley quipped. "We also started getting into harmony parts on guitars that simulated horn riffs. It was a cool record."
