New ’80s-Inspired Music Movie About a Lost Power Ballad Is Striking a Nostalgic Chord

In case you were hiding under a stack of vinyl and missed the news, we got you. There's a new film that should be on your radar: Power Ballad, a music comedy from the fantastic and fantastically musically inclined Irish director John Carney, is headed into theaters May 29, with tickets going on sale today.

Co-starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas, the film made its world premiere at this year’s SXSWFilm Festival, with critics and fans alike raving. Its Rotten Tomatoes critics' score is sitting at an impressive 88% right now. And once you hear what it’s about, it’s pretty easy to see why.

The everyman’s everyman, Paul Rudd plays Rick, a former touring rocker and current wedding singer who lives in Ireland with his family and makes crowds go crazy with ’80s and ’90s hits. Carney told The Hollywood Reporter his inspiration for the character came when he spotted a 40-something dad in a Dublin suburb with a ponytail and a guitar.

“He had the walk of a rock star, but like a rock star for whom it hadn’t happened,” he said. “He was just this guy who just kind of does what every writer is looking for, which is just throw a ton of questions at you that you need to answer. When did he say, ‘I’m okay with not being Bono?’”

Meanwhile Nick Jonas, one-third of theJonas Brothers, obviously, co-stars as an apropos pop boy-bander named Danny, who is going through a few creative crises of his own.

One night, while drinking, jamming, and bonding, Rick plays an unreleased power ballad he once wrote, with Danny falling head over heels for it. Months later, Rick shockingly hears Danny singing his beloved song over a department store speaker. The realization sends Rick into revenge mode, on a mission to duke it out with Danny and get his song back.

Writer/director John Carney is no stranger to a music movie — or music; he calls himself a “failed band guy,” after all; he's since channeled his passion for music into film, and he's been really, really good at it.

Carney's breakout 2006 indie film, Once, is a stellar forbidden love story about an Irish busker and a Czech pianist that took home an Oscar. His follow-ups, including Sing Street, Begin Again, and Flora and Son, are all nothing short of spectacular. Seriously, we never leave a John Carney movie without feeling every single emotion on the spectrum: happy, heartbroken, overwhelming triumph.

    His movies are therapy.

So, if you’re ready to get rocked by a film fueled by ’80s power-ballad nostalgia, boy-band fame, and songwriter egos bigger than arena speakers, grab your tickets now.
