We saw some good and some bad from the Cubs minor league squads on Wednesday. The Iowa Cubs finally picked up a win, but not without some drama as they snapped their eight-game losing streak. Owen Ayers hit a much-needed home run for Knoxville. South Bend got some great pitching and clutch hitting, and Myrtle Beach dropped one in a not-so-great performance. Let’s get to it.

Triple-A Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs snapped their eight-game losing streak on Wednesday in dramatic fashion against the Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals). The Cubs got a really good combined pitching effort from Grant Klobosits (2.0 IP), Doug Nikhazy (5.0 IP), and Christian Roa (1.0 IP), who kept Memphis off the board for the first eight innings of this one.
The game stayed scoreless through the top of the sixth, and in the bottom of the sixth, Iowa broke through and got across the plate. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Brett Bateman made it a 1-0 score with a sac fly. In the seventh, with the score still 1-0, Kevin Alcántara belted his 15th home run of the campaign to double Iowa’s lead to 2-0.
Snapping the streak wouldn’t come easy, though. In the ninth, with the score still 2-0, Collin Snider couldn’t come up with the save, allowing a pair of runs on three hits and a walk, which sent this one to the bottom of the ninth tied 2-2.
But in the bottom of the ninth, it was Alcántara again coming up clutch. With runners on second and third and one out, Alcántara grounded one to third. Justin Dean took off on contact for home and beat the tag on the throw to the plate, giving the Iowa Cubs a walk-off win, snapping their eight-game losing streak. Could we see Alcántara at Wrigley Field soon?

The Smokies dropped a tough one to the Montgomery Biscuits (Rays) on Wednesday. They jumped out to an early lead when Owen Ayers went deep in the first inning with a two-run shot. Ayers has struggled a bit since the call-up a few weeks ago, with just a .197 batting average, so it was nice to see him get a hold of one.
In the fourth inning, the teams traded runs with the Smokies scoring on an Edgar Alvarez RBI single. Then, in the sixth, the Biscuits cut Knoxville’s lead to 3-2 with an RBI single of their own. In the top of the seventh, Montgomery took their first lead of the game when Luis Rujano allowed a two-run homer, making it a 4-3 score. But Knoxville answered immediately. First, Ed Howard doubled in a run to tie the game, then Karson Simas tripled to make it a 5-4 advantage for the Smokies.
However, in the eighth, the Biscuits got to Knoxville’s bullpen again. They scored two more runs on an RBI single off Evan Taylor, though the runs were credited to Rujano, who allowed the baserunners. The Smokies then went down in order in the final two frames and dropped the matchup 6-5.

It was better late than never for the South Bend Cubs on Wednesday, who rallied in the final two innings of their matchup with the West Michigan Whitecaps (Tigers) for a win. South Bend got a great combined effort on the mound from Alfredo Romero, Nate Williams, and Jackson Brockett. Romero started and allowed one run in 3.2 innings of work. He struck out six. Williams followed with 2.1 innings, two hits, and four strikeouts. Then Brockett finished the game with 3.0 frames, one hit, and two Ks.
The Whitecaps’ lone run of the ball game came in the bottom of the fourth when Romero gave up an RBI single, and the score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the eighth. In the eighth, Miguel Useche finally got South Bend on the board. Useche ripped a line-drive single, scoring a pair, and just like that, the 1-0 deficit turned into a 2-1 lead. In the ninth, Cam Sisneros added some insurance with an RBI single of his own.
In the ninth, Brockett put the Whitecaps down in order, and the South Bend Cubs came away with a 3-1 win.

It was a tough day all around for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans as they fell to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (White Sox) 7-0. Josiah Hartshorn was one of the few bright spots for the Pelicans in this one. The Cubs eighth-ranked prospect went 2-4 with a double. But unfortunately, the rest of the lineup combined for just five hits (all singles), and none of the three pitchers really had their stuff.
Dominick Reid started and gave up four runs on eight hits in four innings of work. Braylon Myers took over and gave up a run on three hits in two innings on the mound. Then, Connor Knox finished the game, allowing two runs over two innings of work.
There wasn’t a whole lot of drama or positives for Myrtle Beach to look back on in this one, unfortunately, as is usually the case in shutout losses.
