Carly Pearce is opening up about her public divorce from fellow country star Michael Ray, and sharing the question that still haunts her to this day. Folks will recall the ex-spouses got married in the fall of 2019 and then divorced eight months later.
Now in a brand new interview on The Person Who Believed in Mepodcast, Pearce, 36, says she had realized that her marriage to Ray was over just hours after the two had walked down the aisle.
"You know when you just know something's not how it should be? I think everybody in my life knew I had made a … he made it very clear that I had made a very big mistake," Pearce told podcast host David Begnaud of the wedding.
Even though Pearce was aware that her relationship with Ray was headed for a breakup, it took some time for her to file the papers. But, she admits, she didn’t look for signs that their romance would end until it “was too late.”
"There's a bit of Jekyll and Hyde that I did not see until it was too late,” she explained of her ex’s personality, adding that even though the relationship didn’t work out. “I’m grateful for my very short marriage because it taught me a lot about myself.”
"It taught me just how strong I am," she added. "I knew very quickly this was not what I deserved, and I blew up my life to get out of it. I didn't stay because society tells you you should. I didn't stay because my faith says divorce is bad. I didn't stay because, 'Oh, it's public, I need to do that.' I was done."
In addition to growing through her marriage and divorce, Pearce wrote through the pain and chronicled her split on her third studio album, 29: Written in Stone, which spawned hits like “Next Girl” and “Never Wanted to Be That Girl.”
"I wrote six really intense songs about this," Pearce, who is currently in a relationship with entrepreneur Jordan Karcher, acknowledged. "I thought it was just my story, but what I've learned is that it's a lot of different people's stories."
Despite having reached the other side, Pearce says one question still remains about her past relationship with Ray.
“I think the one thing that I had always carried with me was ‘Why did he marry me?’” Pearce shared. “I don’t know. I’ll never know, but that’s the one thing that I had always wondered, why do it if it wasn’t for real?”
