Offer Sheet Compensation Known, Blackhawks Potential Targets

The fine folks at PuckPedia shared the official offer sheet compensation tiers for this coming summer. They also have a very easy to understand breakdown of which teams have the required draft capital to make an offer at each tier, which is lovely. As the Blackhawks look to make a move this summer, here are the tiers to consider:

Interestingly, the Blackhawks are among only 12 teams that can cover an offer sheet in the second-highest tier, while 29 teams can cover the highest tier. Apparently hanging onto those second and third-round picks is important.

However, as a reminder, this isn’t an Xbox sim. A player has to agree to and sign the offer sheet before the team owning his RFA rights has the opportunity to match. A team doesn’t just submit one to poach the player in a vacuum. So, while there are restricted free agents we would all love the Blackhawks to chase in this manner, those players would need to agree to a deal — and then their current club would have to accept the draft picks instead of matching.

PuckPedia also put together a list of players who are eligible for an offer sheet this summer.

Among the players at the top of the list of offer sheet-eligibility are the top three overall picks from the 2023 NHL Draft: Connor Bedard, Leo Carlsson and Adam Fantilli. Every indication is all three will get a nice deal done with their current organizations.

However, there are some other names on the list that might be intriguing for the Blackhawks this summer.

    Potential Blackhawks Offer Sheet Targets

The Blackhawks want to push their chips in at this point, and there might be an offer sheet opportunity with a few players around the league. The Blackhawks still meet the requirements for every tier of compensation. But how many picks are they willing to give up to sign a player? And what is the likelihood that the team owning the player’s rights wouldn’t match?

Here are five forwards the Blackhawks might consider targeting with an offer sheet this summer.

    Jason Robertson, Dallas

The big questions here are pretty simple: is Robertson, 26, worth four first-round picks? And how high is the number Dallas either can’t or won’t match? The belief is that Robertson wants to be in the same $12M range as teammate Mikko Rantanen, which is a complicated number for the Stars to handle given… they’re already paying Rantanen at that level and have a good roster that’s already being well compensated.

    Pavel Dorofeyev, Vegas

Dorofeyev, 25, is coming off a second straight 30+ goal season. Here’s the kicker: 20 of his 37 goals came on the power play this past season (13 of 35 the previous year). He’s got decent size (6-1, 194) and is Russian, which would be a nice addition with Ilya Mikheyev moving on and Roman Kantserov coming into the fold.

    Mavrik Bourque, Dallas

Remember when the San Jose Sharks signed Niklas Hjalmarsson to an offer sheet and ultimately wound up with Antti Niemi because they forced the Blackhawks’ hand? Someone could make a nice offer to Bourque that forces Dallas to make a harder decision about Robertson. He isn’t a big forward (5-11, 187) but he plays with an edge and scored 20 goals this past season.

    Zach Benson, Buffalo

The Sabres, like the Stars, don’t have a lot of cap space to play with this summer. And Benson emerged as one of the stars for Buffalo in these playoffs. They also have to make a decision on Alex Tuch, so a significant offer sheet here could force their hand on Tuch. Again, not a big player here (5-10, 177) but plays the Andrew Shaw-type game Blackhawks fans love.

    Egor Chinakhov, Pittsburgh

Chinakhov, 25, was a guy we talked about briefly as a potential reclamation project trade target during the season. He was ultimately traded from Columbus to Pittsburgh in late-December for second- and third-round picks and Danton Heinen. After the trade: Chinakhov scored 18 goals in 43 games for the Penguins. He did score 16 goals for the Blue Jackets in 2023-24 as well.
