Director Mike Nichols essentially told Cher to “snap out of it” when she asked him for advice on how to launch her acting career after music.
Originally known as one half of the duo Sonny & Cher, Cher hoped to move beyond her variety-show TV persona from The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and become a serious actor — something Nichols doubted she could do.
Cher recently recounted on The Howard Stern Showhow she was with David Geffen trying to get an audition. “We had all these friends, high as you can go — nobody wanted to,” she recalled. So she “went to Mike Nichols because he was doing a movie, and I said, ‘I’d like to audition for the part.’ He said, ‘Cher, there’s only two kinds of women, and you’re not the right one.’”
Ouch.
Nichols felt so strongly that he wouldn’t even consider allowing Cher to audition. But she recalled him as “sweet, because that’s who he was. He said, ‘But I’ll keep you in mind.’ I said, ‘Well, you know what? I’m talented, and someday you’re going to be sorry.’”
Ultimately, Nichols granted Cher an audition for his 1975 film The Fortune. He passed on casting her, but she finally landed the role of Dolly Pelliker in the 1983 Academy Award-nominated film Silkwood. Cher won the Golden Globe for Silkwood and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Of course, the rest is history. Cher went on to star in 20 feature films, with breakout performances in Moonstruck, The Witches of Eastwick, Burlesque, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. In 1988, Cher won the Oscar for Best Actress for Moonstruck.
In addition to Silkwood, Cher won a Golden Globe for The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour in 1974 and Best Actress in a Motion Picture for Moonstruck in 1988.
Was there anyone who supported her dreams to act in the early days? She recalled how director Francis Ford Coppola and actress Shelley Winters were more supportive, with Winters telling her, "If you want to be serious, and you want to be an actress, get your ass to New York."
