Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub are unlikely to make their way into the Pakistan team for the upcoming series against the Australians.
Pakistan cricket has been struggling to maintain any kind of promising form across all three formats of international cricket. They have recently struggled to even reach the knockouts of any ICC white-ball tournaments, like the World Cup 2023 or the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and 2026.
Pakistan have also struggled to maintain good form in the longest format of the game. Having won just one game at the start of the WTC campaign, the Shan Masood-led side has lost the last three games, against the likes of South Africa and Bangladesh.
Pakistan are set to host Australia for an ODI series, and this would be crucial for their campaign in the 2027 ICC World Cup. This would be Pakistan's first 50-over World Cup since the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. They were eliminated from the group stage without a single win after having hosted the Champions Trophy in 2025.
Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub, the two batters for Pakistan, were part of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. Zaman was used much later in the campaign, and he dominated with the bat. Saim Ayub emerged as a major hero with the ball; however, his form with the bat has been absent for a long time.
Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub have not been available for selection due to injuries, and this has now been confirmed by a senior sports journalist from Pakistan, Ejaz Wasim Bakhri. They are going through the recovery process and are not up for selection in the upcoming Australian One-Day series.
Fakhar Zaman's promising form in PSL 2026; Saim Ayub struggled for runs
Fakhar Zaman was in promising form in the Pakistan Super League 2026 as he starred for the Lahore Qalandars this season. He was ruled out after playing eight matches into the season.
Zaman amassed 401 runs across these eight innings, and he averaged 57.28 in this edition of the competition. He scored runs with a strike rate of 151.89 and went on to score a massive century and four half-centuries.
On the other hand, the 23-year-old cricketer Saim Ayub played for Hyderabad Kingsmen and amassed just 258 runs across 13 innings with a disastrous strike rate of 119.44 and an average of just 21.50. However, he picked six wickets with the ball as well, leading his team into the finals.
Pakistan to host Australia for a three-match ODI series
Pakistan had hosted the Aussies for a three-match T20I series, and since then, the Aussies have been on the Asian continent. Several Aussie players are currently part of the IPL, and some were seen in the PSL as well.
They would next play the three-match ODI series against Pakistan. The series starts on the 30th of May, a day before the IPL 2026 final. They will play three matches scheduled on the 30th of May and the 2nd and 4th of June.
Following this series, Australia are scheduled to play in another series against the Bangladesh team before the team returns for a set of red-ball matches.
