We’re starting to get into heavy mock draft season, Blackhawks fans. On Tuesday, I produced a full, two-round mock draft. Corey Pronman and Scott Wheeler at The Athletic also published a full, two-round mock draft. So let’s compare and discuss the second round picks made for the Blackhawks.
Blackhawks Pick at No. 34
BN — Gleb Pugachyov, LW The Athletic — Jakub Vaněček, LHDPronman’s write-up: “Chicago takes a promising young defenseman in Vanecek, who was productive at multiple levels this season. He’s tall and skates well, while showing the ability to play both ways with potential secondary offense in the NHL.“
I considered Vaněček for the Blackhawks at No. 37. He has decent size (6-2, 194) and has had some helium in his draft stock in recent weeks.
Pugachyov fits the Blackhawks’ draft profile: he’s big (6-3, 198), skates well, plays a heavy game and competes. The guys at The Athletic have him coming off the board at 29 to Buffalo (they didn’t update their draft order for the conference finals). If there’s a guy the Blackhawks are going to package second-round picks to move up and get late in the first, I like Pugachyov. He has two more years on his KHL contract, which buys the Blackhawks some time to settle their current pipeline a bit.
Blackhawks Pick at No. 37 (from Toronto)
BN — William Håkansson, LHD The Athletic — Ben Macbeath, LHDWheeler’s write-up: “The Blackhawks add another good-skating D in Macbeath, who didn’t finish on a high note in the WHL playoffs and at U18 worlds, but was a riser this season and in the second half.“
So we both have the Blackhawks targeting left-handed defensemen early in the second round. The fun with their mock draft is they alternated picks, so both Pronman and Wheeler go that route; I only chose one LHD in the second round for Chicago.
Macbeath, again, has decent size (6-2, 188) and his profile reads a lot like… current Blackhawks defenseman Wyatt Kaiser. He’s a good skater who does everything pretty well, but there isn’t anything that’s spectacular. He probably projects as a bottom-four defenseman. He’s headed to the University of Denver this fall.
The guys at The Athletic have Håkansson coming off the board to Seattle at No. 26. He’s a bigger defenseman (6-4, 207) who skates fairly well for a player his size. He competes, which is why I can see there being a fit for the Blackhawks if he’s available when they’re on the clock. Similar profile as Macbeath, just a bigger player.
Blackhawks Pick at No. 45 (from NY Islanders)
BN — Ryder Cali, C The Athletic — Dmitri Borichev, GWheeler’s write-up: “The Blackhawks take one of the top goalies in the class, prioritizing an area of need with their third second-round pick. Borichev was excellent in the MHL this year and is the top ’08 Russian goalie.“
This was an interesting pick for me on a number of levels. The biggest eyebrow raise for me was the Blackhawks going with a Russian goalie in the MHL in the second round after they selected Ilya Kanarsky, a Russian goalie in the VHL, in the seventh round last year and just signed former second-round pick Adam Gajan earlier this year after two collegiate seasons. With the players still available on their board, I could see the Blackhawks opting to select one of two Penn State commits here: winger Jaxon Cover or center Egor Shilov.
The guys at The Athletic have Cali coming off the board all the way up at No. 25 to Montreal, which was a surprise. Wheeler ranked Cali 37th and Pronman ranked him 42nd, so having him slide all the way up into the first round was interesting. I like Cali’s profile as a guy the Blackhawks would target in the second round. He has decent size (6-1.5, 219) who skates well and is a tenacious forechecker. He’s also one of the youngest players in this year’s class (born Sept. 6, 2008). He’s committed to Harvard, though their coaching change could impact his ultimate NCAA destination.
