Former India batter Ambati Rayudu has made a bold statement regarding the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). He said that LSG could win the IPL today if they were somehow in the playoffs.
Rishabh Pant's men have struggled for form and consistency and are already eliminated from playoff contention in IPL 2026. Their elimination in 2026 marks the third consecutive year that they have been eliminated in the group stages of the IPL.
After a promising start to the season, where they won 2 of their first 3 matches, LSG hit freefall. Near the start, they won 2 matches in a row before crashing so hard that they were ultimately eliminated from the season.
The Lucknow Super Giants lost 6 matches in a row in the middle stages of IPL 2026 and eventually became the first team to be eliminated from the tournament. Now, they have hit a mini-resurgence by winning 2 of their last 3 matches. In total, the Super Giants are in tenth place on the points table with 4 wins in 12 matches.
While LSG's bowling - especially Prince Yadav and Mohsin Khan - has been impressive, their batting, barring Mitchell Marsh, has been underwhelming. The team has chopped and changed their batting line-up and batting order many times in the tournament.
"If they're put in the playoffs, they can win the IPL" - Ambati Rayudu
Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Ambati Rayudu said that LSG's current form is among the best across all teams in the league. He also said that if this current side were to be inserted into the playoffs, they would go on to win the IPL in their current form.
Rayudu also credited Josh Inglis with stabilising the batting order around himself. Inglis wasn't available for the majority of the tournament, but made an immediate impact upon his arrival. "I think if you seed them in the playoffs, they're going to win the IPL. That is how good they're looking at the moment right now."
"They've just come into some tremendous form. Inglis coming into the XI has made it so much better. He looks so stable. He's stabilized the whole batting order around him. I think even Pooran is getting into a little bit of form, but they look very dangerous," he said.
Rayudu also continued to talk about the Super Giants' chances against the Rajasthan Royals in their clash in Jaipur on Tuesday. "RR will be up against it because LSG look like they are going to score 200-220 every game. With the bowling that they have, they look like they're going to defend it or even restrict an opponent to an under-par score."
"Lucknow, if they play to their potential, are way ahead of RR at the moment. It's just unfortunate that they could not do it at the start of the season. So I think Lucknow are favourites for me," he continued.
Lucknow Super Giants' upcoming schedule in IPL 2026
While they are no longer in the race to the playoffs, the Super Giants have a golden opportunity to play party-pooper in both their remaining matches.
They will play the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on Tuesday before moving to their home base in Lucknow to face the Punjab Kings on May 23. These matches are essentially must-win affairs for both RR and PBKS.
