Diamondbacks get production from entire lineup in blowout win over Giants

PHOENIX — Before Monday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo made a comment that his offense had shown a lot of progress over the previous four games in checking off pitches and doing damage in the strike zone.

The D-backs’ lineup took that to an extreme, tying season highs with 12 runs and 16 hits in a 12-2 rout of the Giants in their series opener.

    And it started early.

Nolan Arenado hit a grand slam in the first inning off Giants starter Robbie Ray, the former Diamondback who threw a complete game at Chase Field last season for the Giants.

Arizona scored seven runs in the first three innings of a game for the first time this season and broke the dam with five more runs in the fifth.

By the end of the fifth inning, Ray had left the game with nine earned runs charged to him, all nine Diamondbacks hitters had recorded a hit and Arizona led 12-2.

The Giants did not help themselves with three errors and general sloppiness that aided a hot-hitting D-backs offense to get too far in front.

    A few Diamondbacks highlights:

Gabriel Moreno blasted a two-run home run off Ray in the fifth inning. Moreno has recorded multiple hits in four straight games to break out of his post-injury slump. Ryan Waldschmidt ripped two doubles into left field, finished 3-for-3, reached base four times and stole two bags. He became the first D-backs rookie ever with at least two doubles and at least two steals in a single game, according to the club. Ketel Marte hit three baseballs over 106 mph off the bat. Only one of them resulted in a hit, but he managed to finish the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

With the win, the Diamondbacks improved to .500 at 23-23, while the Giants fell to 20-28.

    Zac Gallen tosses quality start

Not to be lost on Monday was a solid performance from D-backs starter Zac Gallen, who delivered his first quality start (six-plus innings, three earned runs or fewer) since April 1. That was the game when he blanked the Detroit Tigers for six innings, outdueling Tarik Skubal.

Gallen allowed two runs in the first three innings but settled down, retiring the final seven batters he faced. He only threw 81 pitches in the blowout.

The outing snapped a four-game losing streak when Gallen has pitched, as he only walked one batter with four hits to finish with two earned runs.

Ryan Thompson, Brandyn Garcia and Jonathan Loaisiga finished the game without allowing a run.

    Injury concerns

Diamondbacks catcher James McCann, who entered the game as a defensive replacement at first base, walked off the field gingerly with the athletic trainer after legging out an infield single in the eighth inning.

Giants outfielder Jung Hoo Lee left the game in the fourth inning with back spasms.

Ray left the game in the fifth inning after a comeback hit him, although it was initially unclear whether he left due to the comebacker or whether it was time to move to the bullpen at that point.
