BRIGHTON, N.Y. — Plans to renovate the Brighton Town Hall campus now have the green light to proceed.
The Town Board Monday voted and approved the contract for site work. The price tag is nearly $4.5 million.
The board passed the measure with the understanding crews would make a good-faith effort to preserve as much green space as possible when undertaking the project, which includes parking lot upgrades and fencing for the Police Department. The campus includes the Town Hall, the Brighton Police Department, and the Brighton Public Library.
The vote followed several hours of discussion, in which a number members of the community accused the board of not being transparent and called on the board to delay the vote.
“This is the most information the supervisor has given the public in two years. We have never been presented this information! Now, he’s cherry picked the information to present to you and he’s ignored the information that we’ve been commenting on for two years,” said William Price. Price was among three Planning Board members who have resigned due to differences with the Town Board over this project.
“While I appreciate the board delayed the vote to contemplate a reduction in scope and save a few trees, we must recognize that a minor revision to a fundamentally broken plan is a concession, not a solution,” Serge Tsvasman — who also resigned last week from the Planning Board — said.
While assorted amendments were introduced, Supervisor William Moehle insisted that the board needed to vote Tuesday to ensure the project will proceed on time.
“I know some people don’t want to hear about timelines, but we have 60 days — the bids were received on May 4. If the bids are not accepted by the town by July 4, we will have to go back out for bid,” Moehle said.
This is Phase 2 of the renovation project. Phase 1 focused on infrastructure for the Town Hall building; the Town Board has been meeting in rented property since work began. Phase 3 will include recreation elements, including a splashpad.
