ROCHESTER – A grassroots group is asking neighbors how they’d like to see Monroe Avenue improved.
The Monroe Avenue Revitalization Coalition, known as MARC, held a community meeting to gather ideas for projects along the corridor.
Emma Falkenstein, a volunteer with MARC and an associate planner with Highland Planning, said the goal is to identify projects based on themes.
“The Monroe Avenue Revitalization Coalition is a really cool, grassroots organization that came together in 2024 to kind of spur action and community driven change and positive direction,” Falkenstein said.
Over the past two years, Falkenstein and her team have been looking for potential improvements in the neighborhood and listened to local stakeholders like businesses and neighbors.
Kent Reese, a neighbor, said he wants to see better public transit stops.
“A lot of our public transport stops could be really improved,” Reese said. “A lot of them are just not really adequate. No benches, no facilities, just open air.”
Reese said many buses and people use transit along that corridor, making it one of the biggest areas for improvement.
Other improvements MARC and neighbors want to see include beautification through public art and flowers and litter cleanup.
The group is aiming to begin these improvements as soon as possible and hold another community meeting in the fall.
