A teenager was taken to a local hospital in unknown condition after being rescued from Lake Michigan in Waukegan on Monday evening, authorities said.
The Waukegan Fire Department said at around 5:30 p.m., crews responded to a reported drowning at the lakefront. While enroute, firefighters were informed that a person had gone underwater near the harbor channel.
Friends of the victim said they were swimming in the channel, and one of their friends didn’t make it out of the water. They then called for help.
Waukegan Fire Department divers were deployed and found the teenage boy within a few minutes, near the bottom of the break wall, authorities said. First responders pulled the victim from the water, began attempting lifesaving efforts and rushed him to an area hospital.
Information on the teenager’s condition wasn’t immediately available Monday night.
