Chicago Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong drew ire among Chicago White Sox fans after he yelled at a fan during Sunday’s game.
Crow-Armstrong had barely missed making a catch at Rate Field during the contest, slamming into the outfield wall and landing on the warning track.
After the play, a White Sox fan was heckling him and Crow-Armstrong, in a moment captured in a social media video, screamed a series of profanities at her before walking away.
On Monday at Wrigley Field, Crow-Armstrong said he regretted his choice of words, and that he regretted the words he used in the confrontation.
“I regret my choice of words the most, and who that affects in my life directly and indirectly,” he said. “I don’t think any of the women in my life would ever think that I would use those kind of words regularly, especially referring to them.”
He also said he was disappointed in himself knowing that young fans look up to him and that they may see his confrontation with the woman.
“I’m just bummed out about the word choice and that a bunch of little kids go and probably find their way to social media and see that as well, but I am intense on the field and in a moment like that I let it get away from me a little bit. But again, poor word choice,” he said.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell was also asked about the incident.
“He made a mistake,” he said. “Fan interactions happen. You want to try to keep them positive, even when they’re not. Sometimes when it’s in a really emotional situation it’s difficult, but it’s still a requirement of the job.”
The Chicago Sun-Times reported the White Sox fan was at the game for her engagement party, and she shared her side of the story in an interview with the paper.
“Our goal the entire time we planned this (party) was we knew PCA was in center field and we’re like, ‘we’re going to heckle him at some point,’” she said.
It’s unclear whether Crow-Armstrong will face any discipline from Major League Baseball in connection with the incident.
