ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A house fire on Joseph Avenue left one home a total loss Monday afternoon.
Rochester Fire Department’s Deputy Chief Daniel Witkowski said it doesn’t look like anyone was hurt, but crews are still searching through the house.
Joseph Avenue was partially blocked off while crews worked to get the fire under control. When News10NBC first arrived, there was a cloud of smoke over the field behind and surrounding the house.
Witkowski said the fire spread from the first floor all the way through the roof, which ended up collapsing. When crews first arrived, there was so much fire they couldn’t get inside.
The house was unoccupied. The response also resulted in about two feet of water in the basement.
Witkowski said crews have to be prepared to fight fires during hot days.
“We have to prepare ourselves, be physically ready to handle it. But that doesn’t alleviate the stress that we go through in this heat. So after we’re done, we got to rehydrate, break down. We try to let crews break down and open up to take their heavy coats off and try and cool down,” Witkowski said.
The house will likely have to be demolished. Crews are still going through the house before it’s demolished.
