One Insider Has the Perfect Fit For This Bears Defense

Now that the NFL has officially released its schedule, we can return our focus to obsessively searching for someone who could help upgrade the Chicago Bears’ defensive line.

And for what it’s worth, one analyst believes Von Miller would be the perfect fit coming off the edge in Chicago.

In an ESPN piece in which he finds the perfect team and player fits among the remaining top free agents, Matt Bowen connects the Bears and Von Miller. This isn’t something I had previously considered, so I was happy to read about a new name being offered as a good fit for Chicago’s football team. This is Bowen’s rationale:

The Bears are awaiting the return of edge rushers Dayo Odeyingbo (Achilles) and Shemar Turner (torn ACL), and the team didn’t take an edge rusher in the draft. That could open the door for Miller as a sub-package defender for Chicago.

At this stage of his career, Miller is best used as a true designated pass rusher. He had a team-high nine sacks for the Commanders last season.

All in all, this is sound logic from Matt Bowen. The Bears’ inability to upgrade the pass rush with a splashy free-agent signing, notable trade addition, or via the NFL Draft opens the door for a late-spring or early-summer signing. But is Von Miller truly a perfect fit?

Adding a rotational edge defender like Von Miller — someone with plenty of big-time experience who proved he can still get it done at a high level despite being well into his 30s — would be huge for this team for obvious reasons. But it could also be beneficial for a player such as Austin Booker. The 23-year-old defensive lineman had a strong finish to the 2025 season and could be in line for a big year rushing the passer opposite of Montez Sweat. Having a rotation of pass rushers could keep everyone fresh, while also providing opportunities for a young player to learn tricks of the trade from a wily vet.

ESPN analyst says Von Miller is an ideal free-agent fit for the Bears

Von Miller is a 37-year-old edge defender whose résumé will certainly get him into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is an eight-time Pro Bowler, three-time first-team All-Pro, and two-time Super Bowl champ. His trophy case includes 2011 Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year honors and a Super Bowl 50 MVP award for his efforts in Denver’s big win. All things being equal, I’m open to the Bears entertaining a signing of Miller to bolster their pass rush.

I like the point Bowen makes about Von Miller’s potential role on the team. Because while Chicago could use a butt-kicking interior defensive lineman, that type of player isn’t available on the market right now. However, that shouldn’t stop the front office from seeking alternate ways to pressure the quarterback from the defensive line.

One way to go about generating sacks, hits, pressures, and hurries is to roster waves of players who can bring the heat. To that end, Miller collected 9 sacks and 15 quarterback hits while playing on just 37 percent of the defensive snaps. If I could guarantee that type of production for Miller in his age-37 season, I’d have no issue with the Bears bringing him on board. And if it isn’t meant to be, then it’s not as if there aren’t other plausible options.

These are other notable defensive linemen who are currently free agents:

WHY DIDN’T THE BEARS FIX THEIR DEFENSIVE LINE EARLIER IN THE OFFSEASON?

For what it’s worth, Bowen has the San Francisco 49ers (Bosa), Detroit Lions (Clowney), New Orleans Saints (Jordan), and Green Bay Packers (Epenesa) as fits for the other top edge defenders who are currently free agents. There is a case to be made that all of those players could also be deemed as “perfect” fits for the Bears. As far as I’m concerned, you can swap out Miller for any of those four players and rewrite this post from the perspective of one of those players being a perfect fit for this team. With plenty of offseason to go, we might explore all of those options.

One last thing to consider is that Von Miller recently served a four-game suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, stemming from serious allegations in 2023. Traditionally, the Bears tend not to go after players with recent off-the-field baggage. So there is a part of me that wonders if Miller is truly an ideal fit. Nevertheless, his name is a good conversation starter as we enter the dog days of the offseason.
