15-year old Rajasthan Royals star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has impressed one and all with explosive cricket in IPL 2026. His performances have had many clamouring for his inclusion in the Indian National Team, claiming that he is ready for the big stage.
Sooryavanshi made his IPL debut at just 14 years old in IPL 2025. Since then, he has grown to become one of the most aggressive cricketers ever seen in the league. Now, former India pacer Mohit Sharma has joined the bandwagon of experts calling for his inclusion in the Indian team.
Recently, Sooryavanshi earned a call-up for India-A's tri-series in Sri Lanka to be held in June. The 50-over List-A tri-series will feature Sri Lanka-A and Afghanistan-A as well. Tilak Varma was chosen to lead this team, with Riyan Parag named vice-captain.
The tri-series will run from 9 June to 21 June, featuring a double round-robin group stage and a final. India-A are also scheduled to play two four-day unofficial Tests against Sri Lanka-A, but it is not immediately clear if Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will play those matches.
"He should play for India" - Mohit Sharma
Speaking to SportsBoom, Sharma said that Sooryavanshi was ready to play international cricket. But he also said that the national team should not fast-track him but rather wait for an opportunity to present itself.
Since he is just 15 years old, many experts have claimed that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could easily serve Indian cricket for another 15 to 20 years.
“Of course, he should play for India. Why not? What do you need to play for your country? You need to perform against top players and top teams, which he is already doing in the IPL. Now, it comes down to team combinations and how the team thinks. If we are talking about whether he is ready or not, I would say try him out if there is a spot,” Sharma said.
Currently, many players are vying for the opening spot in the Indian team, especially in T20Is. While Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are the incumbents, Ishan Kishan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and even Shubman Gill are waiting for their chance.
Mohit Sharma also shared his thoughts on this competition between aggressive players. “If you see Abhishek Sharma, he also plays an aggressive brand of cricket. Earlier, it was about power and range-hitting; now, there is a lot of focus on technique and timing. It is great for the current generation, led by players like Abhishek and Ishan Kishan,” he added.
He then concluded by making a tongue-in-cheek comment about how he was glad to have retired from playing rather than bowl to the likes of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
“Not just batting, but smashing all top fast bowlers. He will learn and evolve with time. Currently, he is only playing one style and format. With his talent, I am sure he will go a long way,” he said. “I am happy I have retired, or else I would have been smashed too.”
