Pritzker asked about possible White House run, opposition to Trump in new interview

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is in the midst of running for a third term in Springfield, but is he eyeing a bigger prize?

It’s one of the most oft-asked questions in political circles in the state of Illinois, and one can’t help but wonder if Pritzker is thinking of launching a White House bid shortly after his current campaign for governor wraps up in November.

Pritzker was profiled in the newest edition of Chicago Magazine, hitting newsstands this week, and he addressed the contest speculation that he could be eyeing a run for higher office.

    So….will he or won’t he?

“Running for president is something other people, probably on some prediction markets, would contemplate. All I can say is it’s not something that’s occupying my psyche. It’s flattering that people have talked about me in the same conversation they’re talking about others,” he said.

Pritzker hit on numerous topics during the interview, including his adversarial role in pushing against the administration of President Donald Trump. Between the controversial “Operation: Midway Blitz” and, more recently, mocking Pritzker’s weight on his social media platforms, Trump has made it a point to consistently go after the governor, and he was asked about that tempestuous battle by the magazine.

“If I was agreeing with Trump, he probably wouldn’t say anything about my weight,” he said. “It’s like the bully on the playground, right? He wants to make friends with people around him, and so he targets somebody.”

He also didn’t mince words about the state of the Democratic Party, arguing that the party didn’t do enough when it controlled the House, Senate and White House in 2021. He says the party must focus on bigger picture goals and moving decisively if they can regain control of the levers of power in Washington.

“Too much time got wasted by Democrats when we were in control,” he said. “(We must) enact universal health care, act swiftly, enact hiking the minimum wage, and think more broadly about how we make people’s lives easier. We can no longer move incrementally.”

In addition to his comments on the political world, Pritzker also opened up about the death of his father Donald when he was just 7 years old, and about his mother’s battle with alcoholism. She died when Pritzker was in a boarding school in Massachusetts at just 17 years old.

In addition to talking about having to mature quickly because of the early tragedy in his life, he said his parents imported critical lessons to him and his siblings.

“My parents taught us empathy, but I also think living through my mother’s struggles taught me empathy in real time,” he said.
