A 2014 Brian Wilson biopic captured the fragile genius of the Beach Boys icon so powerfully that it’s now considered one of the greatest music films ever made.
Love & Mercy explored Wilson's life through two parallel timelines. The first segment was the musician's struggles with mental illness and the creation of Pet Sounds in the 1960s. The second was his liberation from a manipulative psychologist in the 1980s.
The film starred Paul Dano as a younger version of Wilson. John Cusack played the musician in his older years.
Love & Mercy was directed by Bill Pohlad. The film also starred Elizabeth Banks as Wilson's second wife, Melinda Ledbetter, and Paul Giamatti as his psychotherapist, Dr. Eugene Landy.

The website wrote, "As unconventional and unwieldy as the life and legacy it honors, Love & Mercy should prove moving for Brian Wilson fans while still satisfying neophytes." Critics praised the film for its convincing portrayal of the music legend's lifetime of struggles.
The film's official website describes Love & Mercy as alternating between Wilson's production of his watershed 1966 LP Pet Sounds and his treatment under Landy.
It states, "Wilson had little involvement with its making, whereas Ledbetter was relied upon for the 1980s portions. The cast and crew maintained that nothing in the film was a 'Hollywood' embellishment and that everything was intended to be as factual as possible."

"Conversely, Landy's son Evan felt that his father was unfairly portrayed. Some minor historical inaccuracies were noted by critics, a number of which relate to the minimal coverage devoted to Wilson's family and collaborators. Ledbetter said that Landy's treatment of Wilson 'was even worse' than the film portrays."
“Some of it was rough for me to sit through,” Wilson told the Los Angeles Times in 2015. “It wasn’t always pleasant.” He added, "I thought it was very factual. “I liked when me and Melinda first met."
Love & Mercy takes its title from the opening track and lead single from Brian Wilson's self-titled 1988 debut solo album.
