Canned goods see biggest price increases as Foodlink prepares for SNAP benefit cuts in June

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — News10NBC is continuing to track the impact of inflation on the community.

News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke to Foodlink on Sunday at its hub on Mt. Read Boulevard. Foodlink says it hasn’t had to scale back any of its services thanks to support from the community, but it does have to regularly look at what it’s putting on its shopping list as the cost of certain goods goes up.

That means while pantries aren’t getting less food, there may be less variety. Foodlink says it’s tougher to be responsive to a community’s specific needs when costs start to get tight, and it’s a tough balance between getting quality items and getting people the items they’re asking for.

Foodlink also tries to get long-lasting items, but says canned goods have seen some of the biggest price increases.

“We don’t get to avoid the increases that the retail shopper sees in food and fuel. It’s still hits the wholesale market, too. So our biggest advantage, which is economies of scale, is still an advantage. But it’s still we still have the same negative impact everyone else does based on the state of the economy and the war,” said Mitch Gruber, chief impact officer at Foodlink.

Gruber told Declan that right now, Foodlink is also bracing for June, when people who don’t meet certain work requirements will lose SNAP benefits. It’s trying to make sure all its pantries are fully stocked for then.

Foodlink says this year its budget for buying food is more than $10 million, but a decade ago it wasn’t even a tenth of that. It says that rise reflects the increased need in the community over that time.
