Monday, May 18th – Saturday, May 23rd Prelims at 9am local (8am ET)/finals at 6pm local (5pm ET) Julio de Lamare Aquatic Park, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil LCM (50m) Meet Central EntriesThe 2026 Maria Lenk Trophy is nearly upon us, with action kicking off tomorrow, Monday, May 18th, and spanning through Saturday, May 23rd.
The competition marks the primary qualification opportunity for swimmers to add their names to the nation’s roster for this year’s World Championships.
While several racing mainstays to the tune of Stephan Steverink, Brandonn Almeida, and Maira Fernanda Costa are among the 425 entered athletes, there are a few surprises ready to rumble this week in Rio.
46-year-old Nicholas Santos is one of them, with the once-retired veteran diving back into the pool with his eyes on LA 2028 now that the 50s of strokes, such as his signature 50m butterfly, have been added to the Olympic program.
Also entered in the competition is three-time world champion Etiene Medeiros, with the 34-year-old set to race the women’s 50m free and 50m back events.
Both Santos and Medeiros raced at the SP Winter Swim Open last month and you can read about their results here.
Additional swimmers expected to compete include Hugo Gonzalez, Breno Correia, Fernando Scheffer, Stephanie Balduccini, Guilherme Costa and Gui Caribe.
As in years past, the club race will take top priority, with athletes vying not only for World Championship qualification but also for the chance to take home the overall points trophy. The trophy typically bounces back and forth between Esporte Clube Pinheiros and Mina Tenis Clube but we’ll keep an eye on how things progress over the course of the week-long meet.
